Tree Replacements

Did you know?  Since the Tree Replacement Program began in 1989, NES has planted over 50,000 trees in the Nashville area.

Before a tree is replaced, however, there are several factors that must be considered:  the density, species, health and location of the existing tree, site conditions, the selected replacement species and its recommended spacing.

Tree Replacement Species

Emerald Green Arborvitae – Thuja occidentalis, mature height 10-15 ft.

Evergreen, 3-4 ft. spread, excellent screening plant. Five feet tall at time of planting.  Must be planted 10 feet from power lines.

 

Nellie R. Stevens Holly – Ilex x Nellie R. Stevens, mature height 30 ft.

Evergreen, up to 15 ft. spread.  Five feet tall at time of planting.  Must be planted 15 feet from power lines.

 

Redbud – Cercis canadensus, mature height 20-30 ft.

Rosy pink flowers appear in April, 30 ft. spread.  Six feet tall at time of planting.  Must be planted 15 feet from power lines.

 

Shumard Oak – Quercus shumardii, mature height up to 80 ft.

Yellow to red-orange foliage in the fall, 50-60 ft. spread. Six feet tall at time of planting.  Needs room to grow, must be planted 45 feet from power lines.

 

Sugar Maple – Acer saccharum, mature height 60-75 ft.

Fall colors include yellow, burnt orange or red, 40-50 ft. spread, slow to moderate growth.  Six feet tall at time of planting.  Must be planted 45 feet from power lines.

  

Sweetbay Magnolia – Magnolia virginiana, mature height 10-30 ft.

Six feet tall at time of planting, 20-30 ft. spread.  Must be planted 15 feet from power lines.

 

Trident Maple – Acer buerferianum, mature height 20-30 ft.

Fall colors include yellow, red or orange, 20-30 ft. spread, slow to medium growth.  Six feet tall at time of planting.  Must be planted 10 feet from power lines.

Shrubs

Schip Laural – Prunus laurocerasus schipkaensis, mature height 4-6 ft.

Evergreen, 5-6 ft. spread, moderate growth, 4-6 ft. spacing.  Loves shade but is tolerant of most any conditions.  Does not like wet conditions.  Three to four feet tall at time of planting.

 

Leather Leaf Viburnum -  Viburnum rhytidophllum, mature height 10-15 ft.

Semi-evergreen, moderate grower, excellent screening, 10-15 ft. spread.  Four to five feet tall at time of planting.

 

Natchez Crape Myrtle – Lagerstroemia x ‘Natchez’, mature height 20-30 ft.

Full or partial sun, moderate to fast grower, white flowers, multi-trunks, 20 ft. spread.  Four to five feet tall at time of planting.
